Although the correct term for the animals is Supernus Bestia, most people simply call them animal spirits. Why? Because their spirits are actually the immortal part of them, and it's a lot less awkward to call them that than the Latin name or the translation of it (Super Animals). The animals tend to think of themselves as the epitome of their species -- they are everything that there is about them and at the same time, they are completely different from them. They're used to being treated like they're greater than the rest of their species, but they also feel the burden of responsibility for them, especially if they're on the endangered list and their species is dying out. It's that which leads animals to want to change the world, and because of the developing environmental issues, well, a lot more animals are appearing on endangered lists, due to the destruction of rainforests and the global temperature rising.
The bond to humans is the only way that the animals feel they can influence world events, and although some of them don't take what's happening very seriously, others do -- which is why every animal is very conscientious about what human he or she chooses to bond to. Many of them choose a person they believe is going to have an impact on the world in one way or another, either because they're artistic and can share their ideas with the world through a picture or a book, whether they're aspiring to be a teacher and will influence tomorrow's generations, or anything! Each animal only bonds to ONE human at a time, and each human has only one animal bonded. Only animals have the ability to bond humans (not visa versa), and it is the animals that instigate and use their magic to bind the human to them. Of course, the humans are always willing, although the animal could, if they were strong and forceful enough, use their magic to bond an unwilling human to them. It only results in complications, though, so it's not something that many have ever done. Not only that, but it's viewed as a taboo and any animal spirit who is caught misusing their powers is ostracized from the rest of the Supernus Bestia, and none are allowed to attend Lucian Academy because of the severity of the action. Although it is something that is discussed prominently during the first week of school, the act of bonding is something that is specific only to the animal and human being bonded -- even the animals can't say for sure how it's going to go or what things are going to be like because it's different for every human they bond to. Because it is such an intimate act, the school has several private rooms and areas outside set up for the student and animal pairs to give them the impression of privacy and being alone. Despite how many students glorify it, the beginning of the bonding is very awkward, especially when the student is standing in a room with the animal he or she is going to bond to, and all of the expectations are weighing down and everything that the older students have said about it don't seem to be happening. But when the animal starts pulling at the magic that pulls their spirits together, all of the hesitations and even thought itself is driven away because suddenly there is another presence in the student's mind and a different voice is speaking thoughts to them. If it weren't for the overwhelming surge of magic that creates an instantaneous euphoric effect, the newly bonded student would probably feel distinctly invaded because every single thought they have is put on display for their animal bonded and every feeling, emotion, and need is radiated strongly through the animal's mind. It works the other way, as well, so they also know what the animal is thinking and feeling, and it can be very overwhelming, but amazing and perfect at the same time. Luckily, the magic's effects slightly dull the alienation and by the time it's worn off, the students and animals are both at least a little accustomed to everything that's happened. The student's gaining of the magic as soon as the bond settles is instantaneous, although they don't realize it is there until after their high from the magic of the bond has worn off. The magic takes form depending on the person him or herself as it wraps around his or her spirit and is forced to take a different kind of shape than the freeform force it had been before. At that point, the student's power is born, and, depending on the way the magic manifested, a student can have anywhere between one and four different powers. Usually it has to do with personality, goals, hobbies, and even history, but there is always a reason for it being the way it is, and as they grow, the people around them will be able to see the connection between the human and the powers. |
