Unless otherwise noted, all teachers should be at least well into their thirties; there are, of course, a few notable exceptions, but Lucian Academy prefers to fill their staff with seasoned, experienced, and well-learned teachers -- some of whom have masters' degrees in their area of expertise. Also, this is far from an exhaustive list of all the people who work for the school -- if you're interested, feel free to make your own teacher (check the courses offered to find out what positions haven't been filled here), or create more positions for the administration including Nurses, Guidance Counselors, Secretaries, etc.
This is primarily just a list of all of the "popular" teachers and faces in school -- the ones that your character is likely to interact with on a daily basis. This way, we're all on the same page so far as personality and names go and your student(s) can mope and complain about one teacher or praise another. If you have another teacher and subject you would like to add to the list, make a note of it on the OOC board or use the owner email account at lucianacademy@gmail.com and we'll put him or her up here as soon as we get to it! VIVIAN SCHMIDT. Headmistress. Vivian was practically born into this position as her father was headmaster before her. She is very work-oriented and will spend almost all her time at the school or doing work for it. She strives to give all the students and teachers the best possible school experience, which leads her to be easily flustered and annoyed. She can be quick to snap and is known to be very stern at times, but she does get along fairly well with the students and would never turn one away that wanted to talk. She often socializes with the teachers and students at the school and has even been known to goof around a bit with them. KELLEY RIPLEY. Coordinator/"Matchmaker". Kelley is good with people, but she much better with animals. Both her love for animals and her powers set her up for her busy position as coordinator. As her animal spirit chirps, sings, and rattles off quirky sayings to her, she is the central communication between animals and Lucian Academy. Her animal empathy and animal telepathy help her to easily communicate with any and all animal spirits that come to her with a human or anything else they need. Kelley has met and spoken with every student who bonds with the animals that join Lucian Academy through her. SOLOMON CULHANE. Deputy Headmaster. Solomon is more about paperwork and getting things done than stepping back and taking time to listen to the students' opinions. He's amazingly good at his job, but he isn't a very personable man. He will listen to people talk when he has to, and will talk to them as well, but he doesn't have much patience for liars or people who don't get straight to the point. He's not a man to cross, but he will fulfill his duties in making sure that every student's well-being is taken care of. HENRY JENKINS. Director of Admission and Enrollment. Henry is a very sociable and friendly guy. He enjoys meeting and talking to people, which is a good thing for a man in his position. He is very good with people in general. Whenever meeting him he is likely to bring up his wife and daughter. Anyone who has talked to him will probably know just as much, if not more, about his family as they do about him, even when they have never met them. LELAINE VAMOS. Academic Dean. Lelaine is a no-nonsense kind of woman. She believes that all students should be able maintain a good all-around standing at the academy. She does not like hearing about instances when this is not the case. She is a fairly nice woman but does not have time for idleness and silliness. She always dresses very professionally when at the school. This also shows through in the way she acts and conducts herself with students and other staff. MALCOLM PIETRO. Dean of Discipline. Although most students proclaim him to be more than just a little sadistic, Malcolm actually doesn't enjoy his job the way the rumors flying around school make it seem. He is very strict, and has a very no-nonsense attitude, especially toward troublemakers he has seen in his office several times. His appearance isn't anything less than very intimidating, and the fact that he's a retired Navy Seal and war veteran only intensify the feeling of dread that sweeps through most students when they think of having to step inside of his office. Despite his tough attitude and how hard he is on the deviants of Lucian Academy, Malcolm is surprisingly a family man. His wife divorced him about five years ago (the rumor mill says that he was having an affair, but that was never confirmed by her and is always denied by him), but he loves his son and two daughters dearly and can be seen occasionally bringing them into the school -- especially during Family Week. Even though he's the Dean of Discipline, Malcolm was always a sports fan, so it's really no surprise that he coaches the Softball team; despite his strict temperament, over the four years of knowing them, he becomes as much a father figure as coach to the softball girls and has been known to stick up for them or help them out when they need it, even if it's completely unrelated to softball. ZACHARY FLEMMING. Director of Athletics and Activities. Zachary is a very active man. When he was younger, he channeled his hyper activeness into sports, and he's been hooked ever since. If he's not working, and even when he is sometimes, he'll spend most of his time doing something like running, exercising, or playing a sport. If he's too tired to play and he doesn't have any work then he will most likely head straight for a snack and his game system, where he plays sports games. Many students joke that he's an addict. However, despite appearances, he's very good at keeping up with his work and athletic affairs for the school. He's also very easy to get along with, as long as you don't insult athletics in front of him. XIA UPTON. Dean of Student Life. With a Chinese mother and an white, American father, Xia is hardly average. Physically, her Asian traits are more prominent than her Caucasian ones. Students often know her as one of two things. There is polite Xia, whom someone will find her as on a non-stressful day or when whatever student is seeing her is not in trouble. However, when someone has broken the rules and she is the one who has to deal with it, she is referred to as cruel Xia. She is never abusive to the students, yet she will hold a cold and angry countenance with amazing accuracy. It is very hard to break through her chill exterior when she is like this, and many students try not to get sent to her just so they won't have to deal with her mean stare. ULMA QUINCY. Head Doctor. Ulma is likely to stuff candy down anyone's throat who happens to stop by. She's very overprotective of students, even the first time visitors. She takes her job of keeping them healthy very seriously. She's a somewhat boisterous woman, a trait that could get on some people's nerves very quickly. Most students either love her to death or hate her. MARCUS CAVOLT. VETERINARIAN. To make his position as Veterinarian for the animal spirits of Lucian Academy work, Marcus has both healing powers and the ability to talk telepathically with any animal. He is an older man, and although he never tells the students his specific age, he has the gray hair and odd face wrinkles to show his age. To most students, Marcus is like a grandfather away from home, because of his general demeanor and his friendliness. He loves all kinds of animals, and his office is...well, he's more often running about campus from one animal to the next than he is in his office, because it's not really practical to make big animals come to his office inside a building, is it? YASMIN RASTINPOUR. Guidance Counselor. Although Yasmin was born in the United States, she descended from two immigrants from Iran. She is known around the school not only for her ethnicity, but also for her personality. While some students are a little unsure about letting their feelings out to someone of her race, most quickly learn to trust her calm and sweet exterior. She is always ready to help out someone who is in distress, and while her job can sometimes be very stressful she will never let that leak through in front of a student. SCOTT BANKS. College Relations Counselor. A very cheerful and happy man, Scott Banks is the guy that no student is afraid to go to for help about something that might be bothering them -- even if it has absolutely nothing to do with college, although that's primarily what his job description calls for him to advise students on. Some students have compared him to Santa Claus (it probably doesn't help that he sometimes dresses up as him for the Angel Project during the winter holidays), although he likes being known by the students as someone friendly and easy to trust. He does everything in his power to help students, and is well-known for his love of chess and tendency to read biographies during lunch and while he's on the toilet or taking a bath (although nobody's actually sure how the knowledge that he keeps a book in his bathroom leaked out, the way his eyes widen and his cheeks heaten up a little when it's mentioned lead most to believe it is indisputable truth). GEOFFREY VANDERBILT. Head of Grounds and Maintenance. Geoffrey has somewhat of a differing reputation among the students. Many of the more friendly and social students who have spoken to him would say he's a nice old man, while others would say his slight limp and crooked smile just creep them out. As far as appearance goes he is not at all the nicest person to look at, but he really is a good guy once you get to know him. He does his job well and will answer a call for work at all hours of the day. Ever since he lost his wife ten years ago, his job has become the most important thing to him and he makes sure that the school stays in top shape. FRANCIS NORRINGTON. Librarian. Francis is a small and jittery man. He is also known to have a bit of a stutter that he has to work hard to control. Francis is cute in his own way, and younger looking than he really is. Until people notice the age on his face, they might think him a student, especially from the back. He's very nice and will help any student find what they are looking for. He loves his job, and the only thing he loves more than books is organization. He rarely gets students in trouble, but will when anyone causes too many problems in the library. When not helping students, he will always be found either behind his desk reading or organizing books and working with the library's system. MORGAN AMHERST. Teaches Art I - IV and Art History. Morgan is a relatively new teacher at Lucian Academy and, in his late twenties, one of the younger ones. He's a cool, laid back teacher who believes that over exerting his authority over his students destroys a creative atmosphere; there are no due dates in his class, so long as every assignment is in before the end of the year, and he doesn't care where his students work on their art projects so long as they aren't being disruptive and actually get them done. His Art History class is a little more structured than his Art classes (there are tests and due dates for homework and papers, for example), but it isn't abnormal for him to be distracted by a random comment, decide to hold class outside, or have spontaneous class trips to the art room for 'fun days.' Morgan is the sponsor of the art club, which he is just as laid back about as his classes. JUDITH MARKS. Teaches Drama I-IV. Judith is an old, and somewhat eccentric teacher. She always carefully makes sure she follows the school's rules, but manages to bend and slip around them when she wants. She always expects full participation and effort from her students. She believes everyone could and should enjoy theater as much as she does. There's not much you can do without her director's eye noticing, but she as been known to turn a blind eye every now and then. CASSIDY DANIELS. Teaches Music Theory, Choir, and Advanced Choir. Cassidy is a success-driven woman whose independence and hard headedness can occasionally make her look like somewhat of a hard ass; she's nice, she just doesn't accept excuses from her students. She has an extremely strict attendance policy, especially in her choir classes, and she truly believes music is life. She assigns homework to her students every night (she expects the choir students to practice their songs for at least forty-five minutes a day, for example), but they're usually short assignments. ROGER BYINGTON. Teaches Orchestra. As musically inclined and charismatic as Roger is, it's somewhat of a surprise that he's stuck around in Lucian Academy for as long as he has. However, he's a dedicated and considerate teacher and popularly adored in the school for his pretty boy looks and his charming smiles; it doesn't matter he's in his mid-thirties and still unmarried, because he's aged gracefully and his lack of a girlfriend generally gives the teenage girls a reason to hope he might turn his attention to them. Roger is the co-sponsor of the adventure club and coaches track, and he's often at the head of quite a few 'romantically scandalous' rumors (the latest of this one being that he is romantically involved with his co-sponsor of adventure club, Hannah Hammel). HESSA GRANT. Teaches English I. Hessa is what one may define as a book nerd. When not teaching, grading, or performing other required work she will almost always be found with her nose in a book. She will always make references to obscure literature in her class and will sometimes bring in books that are not on the school's recommended list to read to the class. She only puts as much emphasis on grammar as is required, and spends the majority of the rest of the time educating her pupils through reading and studying books. She is generally good natured and easy to get along with, but can grade harshly when students lack in effort without good reason. BARBIE AVERY. Teaches English II. Despite his somewhat unfortunate first name that inevitably makes his students giggle, Barbie Avery is a considerably talented English teacher who is well liked by the students who pass through his classroom. His class is almost entirely paper based (students will write anywhere from four to seven papers a semester), although he does take time out of his class’s busy writing schedule to have his students read required books and do interesting little projects on them. He is the sponsor of the Newspaper club and also helps out with the Yearbook, although he’s definitely more of a co-conspirator than an actual sponsor of the Yearbook club. FRANCIS SPELMAN. Teaches English III. Although Francis is somewhat of a disappointment--and maybe somewhat of a relief--for the students coming from English II, he is actually a very good teacher who dedicates half a semester to grammar and half a semester to poetry. The other time is spent reading books and writing book reports and the occasional paper, although his true love is certainly poetry and he is much more interested in reading his students’ poetry than he is interested in grading book reports, grammar tests, and papers. Francis is the sponsor of the Literary Magazine club and the Volleyball coach, and he has been known to give extra credit points for students who submit something to the literary magazine or students who attend a volleyball game. QUINN SCHUYLER. Teaches English IV and Creative Writing. Although his true love is Creative Writing, Quinn is an upbeat and interesting teacher who forms close and personal bonds with several students that extend even after they’ve graduated. He has a bouncy, engaging personality that makes him difficult to dislike, although his sharp critiques of writings has gotten him in trouble in the past. For example, although he publicly gave up the position of the Literary Magazine club sponsor to Francis because of time constraints (and now only visits the magazine occasionally), he was actually pressured out of the position because he reduced a few students to tears with his comments about their writing pieces. Quinn is the head of the Honors club, the new sponsor of the Environmental club, and the coach of the Baseball team. TYLER EVELYN. Teaches Speech and Debate. As charismatic and charming as Tyler is, he would probably be better fit for a college setting than a high school one; he styles his classes after college courses, holds open debates in all of his classes, and knows no better thrill than being intellectually beaten by one of his students. He has been known to be slightly competitive with his students and routinely holds bets, contests, and other competitions against entire classes--when he loses, the entire student body wins, and when he wins…well, he usually wins when he loses against his students, to be honest. Tyler is also the debate club sponsor and the soccer coach, although he gives out extra credit for every single school sponsored event a student goes to so long as they can provide proof they were there. IGNATIUS HEATON. Teaches Latin I-IV and Greek I-II. A dedicated fanatic of history and a self-proclaimed geek, Ignatius Heaton is a Latin and Greek language teacher because he loves both of the cultures (yes, the students learn as much about the cultures as they learn about languages) and because he loves teaching. He is a vibrant and excitable man who is more likely to stand up on a chair and start proclaiming his love for a Greek goddess as he to send a student to the office for misconduct; in fact, in his many years of teaching he has yet to fail a student or send one to the Head of Discipline. Ignatius is the sponsor of the Fencing club and coaches the swim team. ROSA MARÍA MUÑOZ IZGUIERDO. Teaches Spanish I-IV. Born and raised in Mexico, Rosa's grasp of the English language came only after she bonded to her animal spirit and moved to the United States so she could attend Lucian Academy. A very strong and intelligent woman, Rosa teaches her classes with the same determination that she treats the rest of her life with; failure in a student is failure in her, and she will do absolutely anything in her power to keep her students from failure. Rosa is the sponsor for the Ultimate Frisbee club and is currently trying to get enough student interest so there can be a multilingual club on campus. NAKATO YAMASHITA. Teaches Japanese I-IV. Yamashita sensei, as he demands to be called, grew up in Japan until he bonded with an animal and moved to America. After graduating he returned to Japan and majored in Japanese and teaching. He eventually returned to the school to take over the position of teaching Japanese. When it comes to classes, Yamashita is very strict, as he believes students in the academy should not be treated any more leniently than they were in Japan. He expects full attendance, excluding excused absences, full participation, and quick learning from all his students. He won't forgive lack of effort and will hardly ever accept late work. He always dresses sharply and keeps things neat. When students don't do the same, he can become extremely peeved. He will not accept food or drink in the classroom, hats, un-tucked shirts, or anything else he deems improper. Outside of the classroom he is a little easier to get along with. Yamashita sponsors the anime club, and gets along rather well with the students involved. He is much more laid back in the group than in the classroom. JOSEF ARCHIBALD. Teaches German I-IV. Although he was born in Germany, Josef grew up in the United States ever since he was seven years old. His time spent in Germany resulted in his bilingualism and in a German accent that gets thicker when he's angry--unfortunately, Josef is often angry. He has a terrible temper and isn't above screaming at people to get his way, get his point across, or just because he feels like screaming. The students that aren't scared of him tend to like antagonizing him, which often leads to even more screaming, but he usually manages to keep control of himself during classes. He's actually an okay teacher, it's just somewhat frightening to try to hand in a late assignment or to watch his face turn purple for one reason or another. MELINDA KERRINGTON. Teaches US History. Her students know her as a very strict hard-ass who's maybe a little more infatuated with history than any normal, sane woman should be. She's the teacher who will send a student to the Head of Discipline for not tucking in his shirt or for wearing her skirt too short. Most students don't know if she has a husband, mainly because she never talks about her personal life in class, nor does she attempt to entice a student to talk about his or hers. She is strictly interested in pounding as much information into young brains as possible and handing out difficult tests that shows she expected them to memorize everything she ever said. RANGER WAKEMAN. Teaches World History and is also the sponsor of the fitness club. Generally addressed as Coach or Coach Wakeman, Ranger is the coach of the football team first and the world history teacher second. His teaching plan--or lack thereof--includes plenty of videos and group projects, not to mention quite a few student taught sections of the textbook. His tests are easy and he'll accept any late work up to the very last day of class, although his grading system seems to be more dependent on participation than earned grades. He has been accused of favoring the football players and cheerleaders above the other students in his classes, but it's never been so bad that it's been taken to the administration; it's just a thing the non-athletic students tend to whine about amongst themselves. KATHRYN O'MALLEY. Teaches Economics and Government. Kathryn O'Malley is an older woman who teaches in a very 'traditional' sense: she lectures for a few days, has a few pop quizzes, and tests the students on the material they have learned. There are no huge projects or papers that determine the majority of the students' grades, although she often assigns lengthy readings from the text book and then lectures on the material the students just read about the next day. Kathryn is also the sponsor of the community service club and spends quite a bit of time organizing or participating in club related activities. WALTER DEVENPECK. Teaches Geometry and Algebra I. Walter Devenpeck is an extremely talented teacher who does his best to draw even his uninterested students into the magnificent world of geometry and algebra. Although he does insist on homework assignments almost every single night and weekly quizzes to make sure his students are on task, he’ll spend a countless amount of time outside of class with a single student just to make sure he or she understands the logic behind the math. Walter is the sponsor of both the Students of Color club and the Math club, and students will be given extra credit for going to meetings for both of the classes (he’s also been known to use his classes to pull talented math students into the Math club). VIVIAN GIBBON. Teaches Algebra I and Algebra II. As dedicated and determined for all of her students to understand algebra as she is, Vivian is a dramatic woman who can be coaxed off topic by a student who knows enough to ask questions and take advantage of her secret love of gossip. She is somewhat unpredictable with her tests, quizzes, and homework, as she tends to get bored of the ‘routine’ and often tries to surprise herself and her students by doing things outside the box. She is a co-sponsor for the Math club, although her participation in the club is just as flighty as everything else is in her life; sometimes she’s there, and sometimes she’s off doing something for another club, a sport, or an individual. TREVOR GAIRDEN. Teaches Trigonometry and Statistics (four classes of Trigonometry and two of Statistics). Teaches Trigonometry and Statistics. Around Lucian Academy, Trevor Gairden is the teacher known for his long winded lectures (always delivered in a monotonic drone that makes even the most scholarly of students sleepy) and his endless supply of homework assignments. He is a fair teacher who is usually willing to take time out of his day to tutor a student or to find another student to tutor someone who is struggling, but he doesn't accept late work and he expects his students to approach him if they're having problems understanding his lectures. He can be a strict teacher, but Trevor doesn't like to see his students fail and he has passed none too few strugglers who he knew were honestly trying to make the grade. OLIVIA DIBIN. Teaches Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Although she has a tendency of getting excited over numbers, Olivia is a not-so-bad teacher who will throw a party in her classroom every time everyone in the class gets an A on her tests. She likes teaching and she approaches it in a very straightforward, lecture-based way; she explains how things are done, does problems on the board, and allows students to ask questions on homework, quizzes, and tests (the questions for the quizzes and tests usually come after they’ve been handed back, however). Olivia does have a few favorite students that she secretly likes above her other students, but she tries to keep herself as impartial as possible and does her best not to pass judgment on her students. She is a participant in the Students of Color club and co-sponsor of the Gay Straight Alliance club. HANNAH HAMMEL. Teaches P.E., Health, and Sex-Ed. High energy, perky, and maybe sometimes annoying, Hannah Hammel is the kind of teacher who always has a smile on her face. Whether she's explaining the wonders of reproduction, teaching CPR, or watching her students run a mile, Hannah can find a reason to show off her pearly white teeth. Despite her sometimes annoying cheer, Hannah is actually rather close with a lot of her students (usually the more athletically inclined females) and she sometimes seems to be trying to relive her teenage years through them. Thanks to her duplication powers, Hannah is able to coach the cheerleading squad and the basketball team, regardless that the cheerleaders often cheer at the basketball games, and the co-sponsor of the adventure club; recently, rumors have circulated that her co-sponsor of the club, Roger, is romantically involved with her, but nothing has been proven. BLAIR METCALF. Teaches Dance. Somewhat of an eccentric teacher and an eccentric woman, Blair Metcalf puts her entire person into dancing and into teaching her students how to dance. She can become frustrated if a student doesn't take naturally to dance or if they are not as dedicated to dancing as she is, but most students know not to enroll in her course unless they are serious about learning how to dance and are willing to take the time to learn how. Her class is based entirely around participation, and the only way a student can regain lost points is by attending another one of her dance classes. Blair is also the sponsor for the dance club, where she is considerably more relaxed and much easier to get along with, although she's still fairly picky with who can and cannot join the dance club (this is because of the production put on every year by the club, which includes all of the dance club's members and is choreographed by Blair). ELIJAH LOWRY. Teaches Interscholastic Sports. Elijah is a highly energetic man who once had a potential career in hockey; after that career flew out the window thanks to an accident that left him physically fit but not physically fit enough to play professional hockey, Elijah turned to teaching and decided to make the best of it. He now teaches students how to play all sorts of sports, something of an alternative to general P.E., and is relatively popular as far as gym-like teachers go. Aside from being the Interscholastic Sports teacher, Elijah is also the coach of Lacrosse, Hockey, and Golf. HERMAN PRATT. Teaches Biology I. An older man who is still boyishly fascinated in biology, Herman is the type of man who wears funny ties and shoes to class just to see the reactions of his students. He expects all of his students to have the same level of interest and excitement in biology as he does, which can make him a very difficult teacher of an already difficult class, but he is always willing to stick around after classes are over to go over something with a student or more than one student, and if he feels that his class doesn’t understand something as a whole he is more than willing to spend more than a day or two going over it with them. Herman is a participant in the science and adventure club, although his teaching and family always comes before his extracurricular exploits. ALYSSA SMITH. Teaches Biology II. Somewhat of a nasty tempered older woman, Alyssa has been accused of abusing her status of a teacher and lording her power over her students. She is extremely difficult to get along with for some students because of how obviously she holds favorites above the others and how strict she can be, but her class is honestly easier than Herman Pratt’s Biology I class and as long as someone pays attention they can probably scrape by with a C or a B. NATASHA WILCOX. Teaches Biology III and AP Biology. Natasha Wilcox is a dedicated teacher who is just as in love with Lucian Academy as she is in love with her life partner, her animal spirit, and science in general. And although she does her very best to be and seem fair, she will occasionally say or do something that has earned her the reputation of being snobbish and bratty toward her students. She does not accept late work and expects all of her students to be able to hold themselves up as far as Biology III, AP Biology, and grades go, but she is willing to stay after classes are over if someone is having a hard time wrapping their minds around one of her lessons. She is the sponsor of the Science club and an on-again-off-again attendee of the Gay Straight Alliance club--she doesn’t believe the clubs are for the teachers, but if there is an interesting thing going on in the club or she feels she needs to show support for her sexuality preferences…well, then she attends without a problem. SUSAN DIXIE. Teaches Chemistry I. Although Susan is somewhat scatterbrained and has locked her keys in her car more times than anyone on campus can count, the Chemistry I teacher is well liked by her students and her class tends to have a high success rate. Her tests are hard and she does expect her students to absorb a lot of information, but Susan does offer a study group after classes every Tuesday and Friday and the day before any scheduled test and she does allow her students to retake a test if they absolutely bombed it. Susan is also the Tennis coach and routinely encourages her students to come and try out for the sport when it’s in season. DENISA BURLEIGH. Teaches Chemistry II and AP Chemistry. Somewhat of a 'science nerd,' Denise is the type of teacher who teaches because she truly loves chemistry and she wants to help others learn about it. She is an older teacher who has been with Lucian Academy for a large chunk of her teaching career, and she's rather popular with the chemistry minded students; she's tough, but she does her very best to make her classes interesting and the material memorable and engaging. PAMELA SULLIVAN. Teaches Physics I. Pamela is a fun, upbeat teacher who is constantly trying to prove to her students that physics is an important thing that can be applied in everyday life. She is extremely dedicated to Lucian Academy and her husband often jokes that she would spend every second of every day at the school if she didn't have him and her two year old daughter to go home to. Currently the sponsor of the horseback riding and the robotics club, Pamela is the type of woman who would be involved in a lot more of her students' lives if it was logically possible. DULCEA PICKETT. Teaches Physics II and AP Physics. Perhaps less enthusiastic about teaching and physics than her colleague, Pamela, Dulcea is still a good (although very hard) teacher who believes strongly in the theory that only the strong will survive. Both her Physics II and AP Physics classes are high maintenance classes with a large workload and plenty of difficult tests that most of her students stress over. She’s only given four A’s out in her history at Lucian Academy, but all of the students who don’t fail out of her class leave it with a much better knowledge about physics. Strangely enough, Dulcea is the head of the Yearbook and spends quite a bit of the time she isn’t teaching or grading hip-deep in Yearbook drama. NATHAN ARLON. Teaches Environmental Science and Marine Biology. Nathan is somewhat of a geeky teacher who is very active in the community as far as recycling and preservation of energy is concerned. He’s somewhat of a health fanatic and encourages his students to get as involved with their community as he is; unlike other teachers, Nathan will give extra credit for anything a student does that will/does benefit the environment. He often takes his classes out on field trips to examine the damage people have done to the world, and both of his classes are said to be eye opening, interesting, and even startling…he lives to startle and upset his students, as it means they’ll remember his lectures and take what he has to say to heart. Although Nathan isn’t involved in any school sponsored clubs, he is very active in the communities in the towns closest to Lucian Academy and he actively encourages his students to get just as active in those communities. CARRIE TRUMAN. Teaches Cosmetology I-IV. At 27, she is young for a teacher at Lucian. Carrie has earned the reputation of being young, hot, and cool. She is quite popular with the boys, as she will often tease and flirt with them when they come by. She got her cosmetology license at 18 and went to college and got an education degree as a back-up. She never thought she would end up teaching, but with some good experience under her belt, she was a good candidate. She's only been with the school for a year, and she is known to be friendly with her students. She rarely gets close to anyone that is not in one of her classes or a frequent visitor or customer to the classroom. Haircuts, manicures, pedicures, and other cosmetic services are given to students and teachers at a discount from the cosmetology students. She hates giving low grades, and will assign lots of extra credit work to anyone who needs it. She does require a certain amount of participation, but she does not expect her students to perform flawless work. JACQUELINE LIGHTBODY. Teaches Magic Ethics and Responsibility. With a doctorate of psychology under her belt, Jacqueline is perhaps a little over-qualified to teach in a high school…or she would be, if what she was teaching wasn’t as important as Magic Ethics and Responsibility is. She teaches her class somewhat like it’s an ongoing conversation, and she actively encourages debate, curiosity, and questions in the classroom; her classes are always staged with the desks in a circle that she’s part of, and she isn’t afraid to call on students if nobody is volunteering to talk. Aside from the open ended conversations, Jacqueline will often assign mini-essays and her tests are in the form of take home essays that the students have up to three days to complete and turn into her. Aside from her teaching duties, Jacqueline is also the sponsor for the Gay Straight Alliance club and is always encouraging her students to get involved with the club. TIMOTHY VASSER. Teaches Drafting and Architecture. Timothy Vasser is a strict, anal retentive teacher who can be difficult to get along with because of how detail-oriented he actually is. His drafting and architecture classes are high maintenance courses that many students end up switching or failing out of because they can’t handle the workload or Timothy’s inability to understand that his class isn’t their own priority. However, plenty of the students who do make it in his classes come out of them knowing quite a bit and feeling prepared for the next step in their chosen career paths, and his assistance in the drama club’s productions (along with several of his students, who receive extra credit for working on set design) have helped make the plays much more interesting and real looking than they’d be without Timothy Vasser on board. NATHANIEL KNAPP. Teaches World Religions and Philosophy. Somewhat shorter than average and highly energetic, Nathaniel Knapp doesn’t care what his students use to take notes (notebook and pen, laptop, voice recorder, etc) so long as they are in class and are at least pretending to pay attention. His classes are fully lecture based and most of the homework assignments are readings, although he does occasionally assign short paper assignments or ‘fill-in-the-blank responses’ to the various readings he assigns as homework. His classes are said to be hard because of how lecture based they are, but his tests are almost always multiple choice and he’s rather relaxed as far as handing in late assignments go--as long as he has it by the end of the year, he doesn’t care when someone turns an assignment in. GABRIELLE NEWBURY. Teaches Web Design and Graphic Design. Computer classes usually get the reputation of being easy and low maintenance, and Gabrielle’s web design and graphic design classes don’t try to disprove that stereotype. She teaches her class on an individual basis, where she gives her students the assignments they need to complete for the year and then walks around and helps them puzzle their way through the complexity of web and/or graphic design. Over the years, plenty of Gabrielle’s ‘star pupils’ have finished the year’s work early and been able to go onto self assigned projects they are allowed to work on for the rest of the year. So long as the students aren’t behind in their work and usually work toward completing their goals, Gabrielle doesn’t mind if they use a few class periods to catch up on work or to goof off on Myspace or AIM, and that rule is especially true for the students who have finished the class assigned work: she still expects them to turn something else into her at the end of the year to show they have still been trying to improve their knowledge, but she is…well, she’s lenient. ULRICH EAGER. Teaches Carpentry and Engineering. Goofy and playful most of the time, Ulrich is a popular, older teacher who absolutely loves what he does for a living. Because his classes can be somewhat dangerous at times--especially carpentry--he can be somewhat insistent that his students follow all safety procedures and don’t goof off in his class. Of course, as long as they aren’t using something that might take off a finger he’s much more relaxed, and he is always seen wearing goofy shoes, ties, and socks to work and usually has a funny joke to tell; he believes teaching bright young minds is about keeping them stimulated and entertained, and what better way that then to go back to his earlier years of being a clown? Regardless, his classes are serious work and students have stressed out about them in the past, but he does stay late after classes are over so students can come into the carpentry classroom for help or to catch up/get ahead with their work. MADELEINE POWELL. Teaches Psychology and Women’s Studies. Madeleine is a relatively new teacher at Lucian Academy; as a widower of five years who has two children who still sometimes cry about how they miss daddy under her belt, she’s an incredibly strong woman who decided to move to South Carolina not even seven months after her husband’s untimely death. She teaches both of her classes, psychology and women’s studies, in a very scheduled way so she can get as much time to drill information into her students’ minds as possible. Madeleine likes to use all sorts of things to help get her point across, and she often assigns readings, papers, and projects out of class and uses lectures, student-made lectures, student-made presentations, faculty-made presentations, and movies to help explain certain, important topics. Both of her classes do have a research paper outlined in the syllabi, but there are countless times when she chooses not to hold class and asks her students to use the extra time to work on their papers. |
