"When you can't breathe, you can't scream [orig. Anaconda tagline]."
Young girls and boys of Lucian Academy are expected to act maturely and in a way that will reflect their education and position at the Academy. If an issue is not addressed here, feel free to take your problem to your faculty advisor who can answer any additional questions or concerns you may have. And remember, this guidebook is only as much as its name calls it -- ultimately, it is up to the student to decide his or her own behavior.
PLAY HARD, WORK LITTLE, FART IN CLASS.
RULES AND REGULATIONS.
  1. Assault of any kind on another student is strictly forbidden; this includes deliberately hurting or harassing another person. Discrimination for any reason is not tolerated, whether on the grounds of gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, or any other reason.
  2. Physical and sexual assault are taken very seriously and can be grounds for expulsion.
  3. Any student found in possession of or using illegal drugs or alcohol will be sent to the Dean of Discipline for suitable disciplinary action.
  4. Possession of any weapon including guns and knives is not allowed; anything that might be thought of as a weapon must be cleared with the Residence Hall Director before being allowed on campus.
  5. Fire alarms are to be treated seriously; any student found intentionally ignoring one will be subject to a fine and disciplinary action.
  6. Stealing or willfully damaging anything belonging to school or another person is not allowed and will result in the student's paying for the replacement of what was stolen or damaged (most of the time by working for the school until the hours spent working equals the amount of damage) and disciplinary action.
  7. Being off-campus and not in the proper dormitory after hours unless due to an emergency or given explicit permission (usually signed on a note) by faculty or parent is not allowed.
  8. Academic dishonesty including both cheating and plagiarism will result in a student failing a course and being sent to the Dean of Discipline.
  9. Any student caught engaging in sexual contact will be sent to the Dean of Discipline and forced to sit through a special seminar on safe sex, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases that is taught by the Sex-Ed teacher.
  10. The range of punishments varies, depending on the severity of the offense. Typical disciplinary actions include detention, probation, suspension, expulsion, or whatever the Dean of Discipline deems necessary.
SMOKING.
Lucian Academy prides itself on its clean campus and fresh air, and as such doesn't allow any smoking on school grounds other than in the very few designated "smoking spots" for the faculty and administration as well as the few students over the age of eighteen. Any student, faculty, or administrator caught smoking outside of those designated areas will be subject to a fine, and any underage student caught smoking will be fined and given disciplinary action. Lucian Academy doesn't strive to promote smoking, but tolerates it for the sake of the faculty and staff (and students) who wish to partake in it and asks that the same consideration be given and all cigarette butts be placed in the provided cans and that all smokers stay in the designated areas. Second-hand fumes from smoking not only harms people, but animals as well.

ACADEMICS.
  1. No electronics other than a recording device for lectures are to be used in class. The only time a cell phone is permitted is if the student knows that he or she will be receiving an important call and absolutely cannot miss it (this is an option that can only be used in an emergency).
  2. Students must respect all faculty and administration; all forms of dishonesty, rudeness, inappropriate humor, deliberate aggravation, and etcetera are not tolerated and will result in the student being sent to the office of the Dean of Discipline.
  3. All unexcused absences result in a zero being penned in for any assignments or exams that might have been due that day, and no chance to make up lost work is offered.
  4. Although students are strongly advised to attend all classes, some situations may arise in which that is not possible, in which case, they must get a form signed by an employee at the health center, faculty member, or a guardian, and it must be delivered to the student accounts and records office for it to be excused. After that, students will receive a slip to show all of their teachers (and coaches, if applicable) who will then excuse the absence.
  5. Students are responsible for making up missed work within the time frame given by teachers, all of whom have individual standards.
HEALTH CENTER.
The health center offers many different services, including:
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injuries
  • Physical examinations
  • Family planning
  • Pregnancy testing
  • STD screening and treatment
  • HIV testing
  • Immunizations
  • TB testing
  • Smoking cessation
  • Mental health (in conjunction with Personal Counseling Services) DISABILITIES.
Although Lucian Academy is by no means capable of supporting all forms of disabilities and disorders, it does strive to maintain a fair and supportive environment for its students who are faced with a disability. Accommodations will be made for students with attention-deficit; hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), deafness or hard of hearing, or vision disabilities. Services offered by Lucian Academy include disability management counseling, computer lab with assistive software, test proctoring in quiet rooms with extended time, scribes for examinations, note takers or taped lectures, readers, and sign language interpreters.

    DORM ROOMS.
    1. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed in a student's room at any point.
    2. Students are not allowed to smoke inside of the dorm room (which includes their suite, personal dorm room, or bathroom).
    3. Also, candles and incense are not allowed in student rooms, although they may bring cans of air freshener, scented wall plug-ins, and non-burning oil incense if they so wish.
    4. Although Lucian Academy allows for freedom of expression, all decorations should be tasteful: pictures and posters should not display nudity or extreme profanity, although in single dorm rooms more freedom is granted than outside in the suite.
    5. Furniture provided by the school in every room includes a bed, dresser, desk, chair, mirror, curtain, and bulletin board. Double rooms include two of all of the before mentioned. Students in single rooms are allowed to bring a couple of their own pieces of furniture, providing they pass inspection by the resident assistant.
    6. Things that a student should bring with him or her include blankets, sheets, mattress cover, pillows, pillowcases, towels, clothes, hangars, toiletries, flip flops for the showers, and any dishes they might use, among other essentials for school and living; students are also allowed to exchange the standard chair provided in the room for one of their own if they choose, although they should return the school's chair to the resident assistant who will know where to take it.
    7. Electronics that a student may bring include a microwave, mini refrigerator, coffee pot, clock, radio, cd player, personal computer or laptop, television, dvd player, vcr player, game systems, hair dryers, and electric razors. If the item he or she wishes to bring is not listed, the student should ask his or her resident assistant before assuming it is okay to bring it.
    8. Freezer chests, big refrigerators, and toaster ovens will not be permitted in dormitories.
    9. Students are given one room key; if it is lost or goes missing, the replacement fee is $15.00.
    DORMITORY VISITORS.
Visitors are allowed between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm, and on weekends same sex visitors are allowed until 10 pm. On the weekends, students are allowed to have one same-sex guest stay the night (Friday and Saturday nights only), although this is only allowed per student twice a semester and hall directors and resident assistants must be notified. This is only allowed for students who sleep in a single room, and they must make sleeping arrangements for their guest, whether that be in a fold-out cot they get from the housing staff or providing a couch in leiu of a bed. The student is responsible for any and all damages his or her guest might cause, and is therefore advised to be careful when inviting guests to spend the night and stay in their dorm room.

    DORMITORY STAFF.
Hall directors. There are two: one for Jasmine Boyd Hall and one for Maxwell Swift Hall. They are paid employees of Lucian Academy and make sure that everything in their dormitory is in order and are the people who fix problems with internet or cable service or make sure that the janitorial staff finds their way over in case of a problem. They also name the student resident assistants and deal with any and all issues relating to them as well as the minor skirmishes that the resident assistants can't handle on their own. Lydia Mennas is the hall director for JB Hall and Jason Carter is the hall director for MS Hall.
Resident assistants. Each dormitory has three, one on each floor; they are all at least second-year students at Lucian Academy, and have an excellent academic record and are responsible, mature students. They tend to be Sophomores and Juniors more often than Seniors, primarily because Senior year is more strenuous and difficult by nature than its predecessors, although some students do become resident assistants in their senior year. Resident assistants are expected to coordinate floor meetings once a month, arrange and schedule events that the entire floor can participate in together, handle minor problems within the floor, and help the other students out who might need it.
Housing write ups. Although acquiring one of these doesn't mean a student will automatically be sent to the Dean of Discipline's office, they serve as a warning that continuation of a certain behavior will lead to disciplinary action, and honestly, most students get at least one of these over the course of their stay at Lucian Academy. Housing write ups can be handed out by the resident assistants and can be because of excessive loudness, displaying pornographic or crude materials in the suite outside dorm rooms, having a visitor or member of the opposite sex over too late, being caught making out (being caught having sex is always grounds for more serious action than a simple write up), among many things -- there is always a reason cited, however, on the paper the student receives informing him or her of the write up. If a student collects five write ups, he or she is sent to talk to the hall director of his or her respective dormitory, and ten results in a trip to the Dean of Discipline.

    PETS.
Only one dormitory pet is allowed per student (a student is also allowed to bring his or her own horse if he or she is a member of the Horseback Riding Club and that doesn't count toward the one allowed dormitory pet). Dormitory pets include any animal that can normally be kept in a house as a pet; the most common pets in Lucian Academy dormitories include cats, dogs, reptiles, fish, rodents, and other small animals. Pets must be taken care of and cleaned up after, and it's recommended that any untrained pets taken out of the dormitory be kept on a leash at all times to reduce the risk of them running away or jumping on another student or member of faculty or administration without permission.

    LEAVING CAMPUS.
Weekdays. Students are permitted to leave only after classes are completed and must inform their resident assistant and be back by 9 pm. They must also check out and in on the first floor at the desk so that someone will have a record of where they are and when they left in case they shouldn't return.
Weekends. Students can take an all day trip to any of the nearby cities if they choose, but all need to be back by 9 pm and must follow the same guidelines as they do on weekdays, with the exception of dances, customs, and other school events.

    HOLIDAYS.
Students are not required to leave over the holidays if they do not wish. Accommodations will be made for those who elect to stay over Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, and Summer vacations.

    TRANSPORTATION.
Students in possession of a United States driver's license may have a vehicle at school. However, it has to be registered, and they must have a parking permit on their rearview mirror or on the dashboard where it is visible if it is parked on the school parking lot. All students with vehicles have an assigned parking spot (the number is written on the pavement and on their parking permit so it can be easily matched), and if they park in the wrong spot, they can be awarded with a notice; three notices and they will receive a parking ticket. However, not all students drive (mainly, juniors and seniors are the only students with the option, and not all of them have cars on campus), so the most common way of getting to a town is by carpooling, although Lucian Academy does run buses of students out if they don't have any other mode of transportation. Bus schedules are available in the transportation office.

    DRESS CODE.
In the classroom, the required clothing for students is dressy-casual; they aren't expected to wear uniforms, but khakis or slacks, button-up shirts that are tucked in (ties are optional), and dressy, non-sneaker shoes are standard for boys. Girls skirts can be no higher than where their fingertips reach with their arms hanging by their sides, and their shirts don't have to be tucked in as long as they weren't made to be. Blue jeans are considered too casual for class, and t-shirts with band logos, phrases, or cartoon characters are not appropriate wear for class. Also, no underwear may be visible, bra straps should be covered, and girls' heels should be no higher than two inches. For those who aren't comfortable in the dressy-casual outfits, Lucian Academy sportswear, shirts, hoodies, etcetera may also be worn; however, slacks, khakis, or skirts are non-negotiable.
