Supernus Bestia. Super animals heralding from every species and sub-species of animal in the entire world. They've existed as long as their species, and none of them really remember how or why they were originally created. The universally accepted reason for their existence is that they were meant to lead their species and direct humans toward the utopian life (filled with peace and prosperity), and some of them believe that they are meant to save the world from its eventual destruction at the hands of humans. These animals, the Supernus Bestia, always appear to be normal animals, and no human could tell them apart from the rest of their species unless they had been told they were (either by the animal itself or another human who knew). The animals are able to telepathically communicate with their own species and other Supernus Bestia. They are almost literally immortal (in a way, they are the gods of their species) -- they don't age and they don't die...not really, anyway. An animal's physical body may die off, but if that happens they have the option of taking over another animal's body (so long as the animal is of their own species) or being reborn into a new body. There have been, however, times when the animal would go into a state of hibernation for a period of time when they grow weary of the world and trying to make things better with only low levels of success, and sometimes they just get tired.

A tradition every super animal has been participating in for thousands of years is the bonding of their soul to one human's for the duration of the human's life. Although they don't immediately take another after their previous human dies, every animal has been bonded to several humans before. For every animal, the choosing of a human to bond with is a process that takes months and sometimes even years: all of them are looking for specific traits. Once they've chosen the person that they would like to bond with, they go to a human they call the Matchmaker (who is also known as the Coordinator) who either approves of their choice or disproves. After the Matchmaker has approved of the human selected, the animal has to wait until the human is old enough to attend a special high school that was founded specifically for the teaching of humans who have been bonded by one of the Supernus Bestia.

The school, called Lucian Academy (named for the founder, Lucian Schmidt, who donated his entire family land and willed a great portion of his money for the school's use) and currently run by Headmistress Vivian Schmidt, was made specifically for teaching high-school aged students who were bonded by an animal. Not only do they learn traditional subjects such as mathematics, science, literature, history, and English, but they also learn how to take care of their animal spirit and how to control the powers they found themselves in possession of following the bonding of their soul to the animal's. The bonding is an almost sacred ritual that takes place inside of the school during an elaborate ceremony that the entire school partakes in, although the actual bonding itself takes place in a small chamber where the human and animal are alone to share in their experience privately, during which the souls are enjoined and the two are able to communicate telepathically with each other. The human of the pair receives special powers (some call it magic, others just call it an added perk of being bonded to an animal) and the animal, through its human bonded, is then capable of influencing events to mold the future into what it would like for it to be.

Animals come in all shapes and sizes, all personalities and interests...pretty much just like people. Some have good intentions, some have bad intentions. After their humans graduate from Lucian Academy, they are basically free from the constant watchful eyes of the school's headmistress and staff to do whatever they want -- within reason, of course. A great portion of the school's graduates go on to continue their education at a prestigious university, many live in one of the towns surrounding Lucian Academy and several become teachers at or employees of Lucian Academy. Although Lucian Academy graduates might not admit to it, they are drawn back to the school because of the level of security it offers them because of all the animal-bonded students and employees of the school, all of whom are usually in possession of high magical abilities.
