GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL. Played in the fall, a volleyball set is made up of six players and will be played until one of the two teams playing against each other gets 25 points--the match will be played until the first volleyball team wins three sets. The volleyball team will meet in the gym after classes on Mondays and Wednesdays for practice during the fall season.
Coach: Francis Spelman Players: TENNIS. Although officially considered two separate teams (the girls’ tennis team competes in the fall and the boys’ tennis team in the spring), Lucian Academy’s tennis players still gather in the courts at the same time to practice against one another. Susan Dixie, the coach of both teams, believes that allowing the girls and boys to practice against one another will only help sharpen and hone their skills; she does have days where only the boys or only the girls come to practice, however. Tennis practice is held on the tennis courts during both the spring and the fall season, and both males and females are encouraged to attend all practice sessions even if their gender isn’t competing that season. Singles practice is held for an hour on Mondays and Wednesdays after classes and doubles practice is held for an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays after classes. Coach: Susan Dixie Singles: none yet Doubles: none yet ICE HOCKEY. Ice hockey is a winter-based, co-ed sport that is coached by Elijah Lowry in Lucian Academy’s ice rink. There are six players per team allowed on the ice at any time, including a goalie. Each game consists of three periods that will last for twenty minutes each, although the clock will only run when the puck is in play. Practices are officially held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 5:00-7:00pm, although Elijah Lowry has been known to change the practice days and times to fit his and his players’ schedules. Coach: Elijah Lowry Players: GOLF. Played in the fall, the golf team has to go off campus to a local golf course in order to practice against one another. The golf team is co-ed and plays the standard golf game, which means their competitive games feature one person against someone else from the opposing team. Because of this there are only six ‘active’ positions open on the team, as they don’t want to risk that they will be out or under numbered by their opponents. A student can be placed on the reserve team if she or he requests it, which means they are treated like a normal member of the team during practices and they are able to replace a sick or busy golf member during golf tournaments. The golf team practices on Tuesdays and Fridays right after school, and they will meet in the parking lot at the waiting school bus so they can be taken to the golfing greens. Coach: Elijah Lowry Active Players: none yet -- six spots open Reserve Players: none yet SOCCER. Soccer is a co-ed sport played in the spring at Lucian Academy and is coached by Tyler Evelyn. Each soccer team will have eleven players on the field at all times, including the goalie, and will consist of two halves that are 45 minutes long. Soccer practices are held on the soccer field right after classes, every day of the week in the spring--students are encouraged to attend all practices, although they are allowed to miss up to two practices a week for other school involvements…missing more than two practices a week will mean they have to sit out during the next game. Coach: Tyler Evelyn Players: Maggie Malmesbury [honorary member] GIRLS' BASKETBALL. Girls’ basketball is played in the winter and is coached by Hannah Hammel (or Hannah Hammel’s second, third, and sometimes even fourth duplicate, depending on what other practices or club meetings conflict with the girls’ basketball matches/practices--she does not say whether it is herself or one of her duplicates coaching the team, and she has gotten very good at copying herself over the years). There will be a total of five girls out on the court at any time, and they are broken up into three different positions (guard, forward, and center). The games are played in eight minute quarters with a fifteen minute half-time break and two minutes allowed for coach and referee called time outs. The game time is only counted when the ball is in play, so games actually last longer than the forty-seven minutes allotted for the eight minute quarters and fifteen minute half-time. Basketball practice takes place in the basketball half of the gym at 5:00pm every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, although they share the courts with the boys on Wednesdays. Coach: Hannah Hammel Players: Olivia Hadian BOYS' BASKETBALL. Boys’ basketball is played in the winter and is coached by Hannah Hammel (or Hannah Hammel’s second, third, and sometimes even fourth duplicate, depending on what other practices or club meetings conflict with the boys’ basketball matches/practices--she does not say whether it is herself or one of her duplicates coaching the team, and she has gotten very good at copying herself over the years). Coach: Hannah Hammel Players: none yet FOOTBALL. Football is played in the fall season and is coached by Ranger Wakeman; there is also a football boot camp offered in the summer a few weeks before the fall season starts, as Coach Wakeman likes to get as far ahead of the other teams as possible (attendance to the football boot camp is not required, although highly recommended--the boys who attend the boot camp find themselves starting a lot more than the boys who don’t attend it). Their football games will have a total of eleven players per team on the field at all times, and they play twelve minute quarters with a half-time after the second quarter. However, because the time stops during certain plays, football games will usually last longer than the sixty-three minutes the four quarters and half time promises. Coach: Ranger Wakeman Defense: none yet Offense: none yet SWIM TEAM. The swim team is co-ed and competes in the winter season and is made up of six different competitions. The six different competitions are: the butterfly stroke, the backstroke, the breaststroke, freestyle, the individual medley, and the medley relay. The four individual strokes are self explanatory, but the individual medley is a race made up of the four strokes (butterfly stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) and raced by one person and the medley relay is made up of the four strokes (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly stroke, and freestyle) and raced by four individuals who tag one another after the end of their stroke. The swim team is coached by Ignatius Heaton and practice is held in Lucian Academy’s indoor pool on Mondays and Fridays from 6:00-8:00pm, although students are not required to stay for the entire two hours and often come for half hour or hour long practices. Coach: Ignatius Heaton Butterfly Stroke: Alastair Ashford, North Hero Backstroke: North Hero Breaststroke: none yet Freestyle: Alastair Ashford Individual Medley: none yet Medley Relay: none yet TRACK. Track is a co-ed sport that is played in the spring with several events held in a single competition (a full list can be found here). Roger Byington coaches track and holds practices out on the track around the football field for the track event participants every Monday and Wednesday right after classes, and on the field designated for the field events of track right after classes every Tuesday and Wednesday for the field event (throwing and jumping events) participants. Coach: Roger Byington Track Event Participants: none yet Throwing Event Participants: none yet Jumping Event Participants: Amelia Owens GIRLS' LACROSSE. The girls’ lacrosse team is coached by Elijah Lowry and played in the spring season. There will be twelve girls per team out on the lacrosse field at all times, and they are put into four positions: attackers, midfielders, defenders, and goalie. Girls’ lacrosse is specifically designed to make the sport less dangerous and in order to allow less physical contact between the players, and therefore there is less equipment worn in girls’ lacrosse than there is in boys’ lacrosse. Girls’ lacrosse practice is scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays right after classes and is held on the lacrosse field. There is an optional, co-ed practice held on Friday, right after classes, where the girls and boys are typically sorted into ten player teams and allowed to play against one another--in these games, the boys are expected to play nice and the girls are expected to play fair. Coach: Elijah Lowry Players: none yet BOYS' LACROSSE. The boys’ lacrosse team is coached by Elijah Lowry and played in the spring season. There will be ten boys per team out on the lacrosse field at all times, and they are put into four positions: attackmen, midfielders, defensemen, and goalie. Because boys’ lacrosse is a very hands on and aggressive sport, all in-play players are required to wear helmets, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads (rib pads are encouraged but not required), and athletic supporters and protective cups. Boys’ lacrosse practice is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays right after classes on the lacrosse field. There is an optional, co-ed practice held on Friday, right after classes, where the girls and boys are typically sorted into ten player teams and allowed to play against one another--in these games, the boys are expected to play nice and the girls are expected to play fair. Coach: Elijah Lowry Players: none yet SOFTBALL. Played in the spring and coached by Malcolm Pietro, the softball team is an all-girl sport that is distinguished from baseball because it is played by females, has a larger ball, and some differing rules. Lucian Academy plays in a modified pitch softball league, which means the speed of the pitches are limited because the pitchers are not allowed to raise their arms above their shoulders. The softball games last for 7 innings, which end every time the team in the field manages to strike out three of the other team’s batters. Softball practice is held on the softball diamond right after classes on Tuesday and Thursday, and Malcolm expects his team to be prompt and present at all of the practices; missing even one practice means not being allowed to play in the next game. Coach: Malcolm Pietro Players: none yet BASEBALL. The Lucian Academy’s Baseball team is an all-boy sport that is played in the spring season and coached by Quinn Schuyler. The game is played by two teams of nine players each, although the baseball team can have reserve players who are put into play if one of the ‘main players’ are unable to make it to a game. In the outfield, there are three positions a person can play: battery (consists of the pitcher and the catcher), infielder (consists of first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman), and outfielder (consists of left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder). The batting order is decided pre-game and must be stuck to during game play, although communication with the umpire can cause an order change mid-game. Baseball practice is held on Mondays and Wednesdays right after classes on the baseball diamond and usually lasts for an hour or so. Coach: Quinn Schuyler Players: none yet Reserve Players: none yet CHEERLEADING SQUAD. The cheerleading squad is a co-ed sport that is yearlong and participates in many different things; the cheerleaders cheer for multiple sports, for instance, and also participate in national cheerleading competitions that can get them free rides around the United States if they place high enough in their divisions. The cheerleading squad is highly exclusive and, while it welcomes gymnastically talented boys and girls, it doesn’t accept anyone who cannot do a certain amount of gymnastic moves; tryouts during the first week of classes are often painful, as plenty of girls and boys are seen crying or sulking because they didn’t make the cut. Hannah Hammel is the cheerleading squad’s coach and it is secretly her first priority, as she rarely trusts one of her duplicates to coach the squad (this isn’t a widely known fact, as it is difficult to tell the original Hannah apart from the duplicated Hannah). Cheerleading practice is held yearlong every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday right after classes, either in the gym or the gymnastics room (depending on what they’re practicing), although Hannah will hold practices other days of the week if she feels the squad needs more practice for an upcoming competition.
